Katrina disaster help pours in

Hurricane Katrina disaster relief contributions from the U.S. government, the private sector and the public have reached a total of $10,787,000,000. Bigtime, commercial fund raising events and concerts are still to come, and a national, cooperative fund raiser is being scheduled for anyone wishing to participate on September 9.

The American public alone, not counting the government's help, have given at least $287-million to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers are also streaming into the American Red Cross's "Disaster Response Training" classes, ready to ship out at a moments notice after taking an intense 9 hour preparation class. The Sacramento Sierra Chapter listed all "classes full" by 1am - Friday, but future classes are opening up daily and are being posted here.

"The pace of giving is unprecedented in recent American history. In the 10 days after September 11, Americans donated $239-million to charitable causes, and in the 9 days after the tsunamis hit, major American relief groups raised $163-million." —The Chronicle of Philanthropy

"Companies and foundations have given or pledged $95-million to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast region and in Florida. Among the contributions to date: Wal-Mart (Bentonville, Ark.) has pledged $15-million in cash to help federal relief efforts, and has donated $1-million to the Salvation Army and $1-million to the American Red Cross." —The Chronicle of Philanthropy

"Of the $196.9-million contributed to the American Red Cross, in Washington, by the end of the day Thursday, $110-million came in through the organization's Web site. In the five months following the tsunamis in the Indian Ocean, 22 major American charities that responded to the emergency raised a total of $1.27-billion, $311.4-million of which came in through the Internet." —The Chronicle of Philanthropy

"In Washington, the Senate convened in special session Thursday night and approved a $10.5 billion disaster relief request from the Bush administration. The House is expected to do the same when it takes up the matter Friday." —CNN.com

World leaders offer sympathy, aid:

"Australia on Friday said it would donate A$10 million (US$7.7 million) immediately to the American Red Cross as well as sending a team of emergency management specialists to identify what other help could be offered and providing services where most needed. Japan donated $200,000 to the Red Cross and would also provide up to $300,000 in aid supplies such as tents and power generators, The Associated Press quoted officials as saying." —CNN.com
